Rare Oval Reliquary Containing Relics Of The Passion Of Christ And A Wax Seal
A rare and evocative oval reliquary dedicated to the relics of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, as indicated by the significant inscription “De Passione D.N.J.C.” located at the top of the composition.
The reliquary is enclosed within an elegant dark, carved oval wooden frame, embellished with gilded decorative elements featuring scrollwork and plant motifs. Inside is a rich devotional composition, characterized by numerous small relics arranged neatly around the central cross-shaped relic.
The various relics are presented on small textile backgrounds of different shades, enclosed within elaborate borders made of metal threads worked into spiral and scroll motifs, using a refined decorative technique. Each is accompanied by a small handwritten inscription indicating its name; references to various elements related to the Passion of Christ are recognizable, including Spinae, Vestis, Lintei, Funis, Columna, Cingulum, and others.
The composition, which is extremely rich and dramatic, is dominated by the red hue of the background, which creates a strong contrast with the fabrics, the metal wires, and the gilded frame.
Of particular interest is the back of the reliquary, where the red wax seal is still preserved, sealed, attached to the locking mechanism and accompanied by the threads that attest to its function. The preservation of the seal is of particular interest for the history of the object and its devotional character.
A rare and fascinating piece of sacred art, characterized by its extraordinary concentration of relics, the richness of its interior decoration, and the presence of the original seal. A piece of great visual impact, particularly suited for a collection of sacred art and antique devotional objects.
