Engraving By Petitjean, After Georges Cain: A Couple In Front Of The Bookstalls On The Banks Of The Seine

A lovely engraving depicting two lovers in front of a bookseller’s display on the Quai Saint-Michel in Paris.
This etching was created on pearlescent Japanese paper.
It bears the signature of the engraver François Petitjean and the date 1902 in the lower left corner, as well as the name of the artist, Georges Cain, 1893.
This etching is mounted on Bristol board; it is also glued to a second sheet of Bristol board and secured with a small adhesive patch in the upper right corner (see last photo).
Georges Cain (1856–1919)
born on April 16, 1856, he was the son of the famous animal sculptor Auguste Cain; he studied under the painters Alexandre Cabanet and Georges Vibert, but remained heavily influenced by his third mentor, Edouard Detaille.
His works were primarily devoted to genre scenes as well as historical and military scenes.
He served as curator of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris from 1897 to 1914.
Many of his works are housed in various museums: Bayeux, Amiens, Paris, etc....
