Copenhagen, 1755 – Pair of silver candlesticks

Pair of silver candlesticks made in Copenhagen in 1755.

Each candlestick rests on a square base with scalloped and molded edges, arranged in several stepped sections. The slender shaft features a succession of facets, bulges, and moldings, and ends in a faceted candle holder that echoes the geometric design of the entire piece.

Both candlesticks are hallmarked and bear the Copenhagen hallmarks as well as the date 1755. The silversmith’s mark, which is unidentified, features a motif resembling two wavy lines or two lightning bolts.

One of the two candlesticks has been restored at the shaft. It was likely broken and then re-soldered, with the addition of a ring intended to reinforce and stabilize the piece. This repair is visible in the photographs.

The pair has a total weight of 686 grams.
