An exceptional and prestigious living room display cabinet made of molded and richly carved walnut. This piece of fine cabinetry corresponds to the so-called “deluxe” variant of the famous “umbel” series, cataloged and illustrated on a full page in the reference work by Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha, *Gallé Furniture, Antique Collectors’ Club*, page 310, plate 46. It is distinguished by sculptural craftsmanship pushed to its naturalistic peak.
- The Ceremonial Pediment: Unlike classic models with a simple cornice, this display cabinet is crowned by a sumptuous and imposing asymmetrical pediment made of solid wood, entirely carved in openwork, depicting umbels blooming in the wind.
- The Sculpture in the Round: Inside the cabinet, the structure breaks free from traditional furniture design: a masterful umbelliferous stem, carved in relief, emerges from the back to rise up in the center of the display cabinet and spread out to support the cut-out top shelf.
- The Marquetry Decorations: The back of the cabinet features a large panel inlaid with precious and exotic woods depicting flowering umbellifers beneath a cloudy sky. The solid base of the door features a second marquetry panel with a sinuous floral motif.
- Architecture & Base: The piece rests on a sinuous, fluted base, reinforced by corner brackets and low crossbars deeply openworked with botanical motifs. The interior shelves feature superb multi-lobed cutouts mimicking the curves of foliage.
- Signature: Signed “Gallé” in fine marquetry within the design.
