Exquisite Louis XV-Period Chest of Drawers, Rosewood Marquetry, Violetwood, Stamped HEDOUIN, Resting on Small Arched Legs.
This chest of drawers, curved on all sides, opens at the front with three wide drawers in three rows, and is topped with a lovely royal red marble top, molded and scroll-cut to follow the curves of the chest. It features rich marquetry work, arranged in scrolls and herringbone patterns, highlighted by contrasting frames. Beautiful and rich gilded and chiseled bronze ornamentation, including finials, feet, lock plates, pull handles, and lamp bases. It is stamped J.B. HEDOUIN and JME on its right side panel.

Jean-Baptiste Hedouin (Died in January 1783) Cabinetmaker and marquetry artist. Paris. Became a master craftsman on May 22, 1738. In his workshop on Rue Traversière-Saint-Antoine, Hedouin produced chests of drawers and writing desks adorned with various types of marquetry, often featuring geometric motifs in the Louis XV style.
Little is known about the life of Jean-Baptiste Hedouin. After becoming a master craftsman, he set up his workshop on Rue Traversière-Saint-Antoine. All the furniture he produced was of fine quality. His furniture, primarily in the Regency and Louis XV styles, almost all veneered with sheet or grid-patterned veneer, was varied: wardrobes, flat and sloped desks, bookcases… but it was the chests of drawers that made up the bulk of his production. Most of them featured the bulky, heavy forms of the Regency style. Others had more graceful, lighter lines, with the side panels and apron accented by gilded bronze fittings. Two pieces deserve special mention, as they are quite different from Jean-Baptiste Hedouin’s usual style. These are a pair of stepped corner cabinets, finished in Chinese lacquer and polychrome European varnish, with rocaille bronze frames. Since his mark has been found on certain pieces of furniture alongside that of his colleague Migeon, it is presumed that Hedouin also worked for dealers. After a long career, Jean-Baptiste Hedouin died at his home on Rue Traversière-Saint-Antoine in 1783.
