This bronze bust with a medal patina depicts Louise Brongniart, the celebrated child immortalized by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon.

Louise Brongniart was the daughter of the architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart (1739–1813), who designed the Palais Brongniart in Paris, formerly the headquarters of the Paris Stock Exchange.

The original model was created by Houdon in 1777 and remains one of his most remarkable portraits of a child.

The young girl is depicted with great delicacy in the treatment of the face, hairstyle and bust, reflecting the elegance of Houdon’s Neoclassical model.

The bronze bears the signature “HOUDON sculp” on one side and the foundry mark “SUSSE FRERES” on the other, with the founder’s stamp underneath the base.

Presented on its bronze socle.
