Surrealist Painting From The Russian School Of Leningrad, Microcosmic & Dreamlike Composition

The painting presented here is fully in line with the Russian Surrealist movement (or nonconformist/visionary art of Eastern Europe), blending traditional folk motifs with a geometric and dreamlike aesthetic.
The entire symbolic composition is framed within a central silhouette—either a guitar or an hourglass.
Signed and dated “78” on the reverse, with a monogram in the lower right corner, and signed in full on the reverse.

Microcosmic composition: Several micro-scenes coexist within this silhouette. We can make out a central standing figure holding a half-open umbrella; below him, a broad-shouldered military figure wearing a military cap; stylized faces reminiscent of Russian icon art, figures draped in the style of Russian folk tales, and other human faces with geometric features.
Cosmic and Geometric Symbolism: The use of pointillist textures, celestial spheres, mythological animals (such as the polar bear at the top), and deep shades of blue and purple evokes the mysticism of the Russian avant-garde.
Although the overall aesthetic of this work is deeply rooted in the non-nonconformist Russian avant-garde movement and metaphorical realism (which recalls the complex universe of visionary artists such as Pavel Filonov or Wassily Kandinsky’s spiritual explorations of color), I was unable to identify the artist.
However, several key clues help guide the search: The style and period; the technique of layering organic motifs, the mystical aspect of the integrated portraits (the veiled faces) and the use of pigments in shades of violet and emerald strongly point to artists from the Leningrad School or underground circles from the 1970s to the 1990s, a period when Russian spiritual surrealism experienced a major revival outside official Soviet channels.
