Egg-shaped Bergamot Box, Martin Varnish, 18th Century
A charming egg-shaped bergamot box dating from the 18th century.
Small in size, it features a structure made from dried citrus peel—traditionally bergamot—which is still clearly visible on the inside.
The exterior is coated with an elegant, deep varnish in the style of Martin varnish, enhanced by a delicate gilded decoration featuring flowers, bouquets, and foliage. A gilded frieze harmoniously highlights the junction where the two parts of the box meet.
This piece is particularly appealing due to its ovoid shape, the richness of its decoration, and its beautiful antique patina. The interior, preserved in its original condition, allows one to appreciate the plant material used in its construction.
