Fine Inlaid Tobacco Grater, Holland, 18th Century
Charming pocket tobacco grater in the form of a pen case, fitted with a sliding cover revealing an iron grating plate pierced on both sides with a geometric pattern. The finely grated snuff is collected through a clever brass spout.
Made of fruitwood, the box is extensively inlaid with bone and coloured wood on every surface, including the hatched sides. The decoration features heart and arrow motifs, characteristic of Dutch folk art.
Well preserved overall. Minor signs of use are consistent with age, while the sliding cover shows slight looseness due to the natural drying of the wood. No evidence of worm damage.
