Titled, captioned, and signed in the lower right corner: "Delafontaine père"
Inscription: "View of the ruins of Fontdouce Abbey, where the meeting took place between Philip the Fair and the Pope, during which they decided on the destruction of the Knights Templar"
Referring to the secret meetings of 1307 between Philip IV the Fair and Pope Clement V (former archbishop of Bordeaux), which preceded the arrest of the Knights Templar and the dissolution of the Order.
A student of the leading figure of Neoclassicism, Jacques-Louis David, Pierre-Maximilien Delafontaine (1777–1860) exhibited at the Paris Salons between 1798 and 1802. In his works, he combines the precision of Davidian academic linework with the documentary sensibility of the landscape painters and archaeologists of the Empire and the Restoration.
