Paul Chocarne-Moreau, 1855–1930, a French painter born Paul Charles Chocarne in Dijon into a family of artists. His father was a painting teacher, and he was the cousin of the sculptors Mathurin, Hippolyte, and Auguste Moreau. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied successively under Tony Robert-Fleury and William Bouguereau. He made his debut at the 1882 Salon des Artistes Français and exhibited there fairly regularly from that point on under the name Paul Chocarne-Moreau. He received an Honorable Mention in 1886, and in 1900 he was awarded a Second-Class Medal and was exempted from competition. He also won a Bronze Medal at the 1889 World’s Fair. He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1906. Chocarne-Moreau specialized in genre painting. He depicted scenes from Parisian life whose protagonists were generally mischievous young boys from working-class backgrounds: young pastry apprentices, chimney sweeps, altar boys, schoolchildren, etc. A witness to his time, he painted works such as *Sur la barricade*, which he exhibited at the 1909 Salon. He has been regarded as a precursor to Norman Rockwell. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on May 5, 1930, and was buried in the Levallois-Perret cemetery. Works are held in the museums of Cambrai and Dijon. The artist is listed in the Bénézit (with examples of his signatures). Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
