Important Bronze Sculpture, “the Thinker,” Signed Chiparus, Art Deco – First Half Of The 20th Century

Artist: Chiparus

This large bronze by Chiparus exudes a sculptural presence of rare intensity, in which the figure of the thinker, captured in a meditative pose, seems suspended between silence and reflection. The deep green patina subtly reveals the finesse of the modeling, causing every anatomical contour to shimmer in the light, while the drapery, crafted with remarkable precision, envelops the body with an almost lifelike fluidity. The impassive figure, chin resting on a powerfully defined hand, embodies a majestic introspection. The carved wooden base enhances the nobility of the piece as a whole, providing a warm pedestal for this meditative silhouette that commands attention with quiet strength. The work expresses Chiparus’s artistic maturity, blending classical elegance and emotional depth in harmonious continuity. The work is signed “-DH Chiparus-” and stamped “-BRONZE PARIS-”.

Demétre Haralamb Chiparus (1886–1947) was a major Art Deco sculptor, born in Romania and based in Paris from 1912 onward, where he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. Active primarily between 1914 and 1933, he became famous for his chryselephantine sculptures inspired by the Ballets Russes, music hall, and ancient Egypt. Produced by the major Parisian foundries, he established a refined, slender, and theatrical style that made him one of the undisputed masters of Art Deco sculpture.
