Here is a mail carrier’s rattle from the late 18th or early 19th century—
The Postal Museum has one on display (see photo at the end of the slideshow). It was a type of rattle used by mail carriers for the Petite Poste (which appeared around 1760), also known as a “cliquette” or “ténèbre.” The mail carrier, equipped with this instrument, would signal his arrival to people waiting for a letter.
The object is held by the top handle and shaken so that the metal pieces attached to either side of the wooden body strike against each other.

Height including handle: 25.5 cm – plate alone: 22.3 x 15 x 2.7 cm
