Art Nouveau (jugendstil) Majolica Planter, Manufaktur Karlsruhe, Circa 1905–1908
Large Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) planter made of glazed terracotta (majolica), Model 1002, designed by the German painter and ceramicist Wilhelm Süs (1861–1933) for the prestigious Großherzogliche Majolika-Manufaktur Karlsruhe.
Oval in shape, the basin—featuring relief decoration simulating wickerwork—is draped with a rich garland of flowers and blue forget-me-nots.
It is supported at each end by four putti resting on a terrace resembling a grassy lawn dotted with flowers.
The glaze has a superb sheen with magnificent shades of green, blue, and cream characteristic of early 20th-century German productions.
Very good condition.
No chips.
Slight marbling and some wear on the glaze inside the planter (see photo).
