Patinated bronze inkwell with marine motifs, seashells, andcrabs — France, circa 1900
An elegant andrare patinated bronze inkwell with naturalistic decoration, depicting aparticularly original marine-inspired composition.
The body ofthe inkwell takes the form of a large seashell, rendered in highrelief and resting on a rocky base with undulating forms. Hiddenwithin this composition, a crab appears amid themineral and plant elements, fully contributing to the element of surprise andthe object’s lively character.
The piecedisplays high-quality casting and engraving, with thevarious textures—seashell, rock, and crustacean—being carefullydistinguished. The antique patina, with its deep brown and slightlygolden hues, highlights the reliefs and accentuates the sculptural quality ofthis piece.
With itsformal vocabulary, its extreme naturalism, and its penchant for motifs drawn from themarine world, this object is fully in keeping with French decorativeart of the late 19th century and the early 20thcentury, at the crossroads of Japonism and Art Nouveau—a periodthat was particularly prolific for works of art and desk accessories.
A piece ofcharacter, highly decorative, suitable for acabinet of curiosities, a library, or an office, as well as for a collection ofBelle Époque bronzes.
