Devotional Picture With An Antique Gilded Frame And Bone Inlays
This object is an antique devotional shrine featuring a finely crafted bone relief mounted on a velvet background, depicting the Immaculate Virgin (or the Assumption). In the center is the figure of the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped or outstretched in prayer, surmounted by a golden halo.Decorative elements: On either side of the Madonna are two vertical hanging elements (resembling floral motifs or stylized liturgical vestments), while at the bottom is the head of a winged putto (a little angel). The corners of the composition are finished with small floral friezes or symmetrical volutes. The white reliefs are made of bone. The background is a dark green velvet fabric, enclosed by a gilded wooden display-case frame. This type of artifact belongs to the tradition of domestic sacred and devotional art, which was widespread in Italy (particularly in the artisan workshops of central and southern Italy, such as the Sicilian or Neapolitan traditions) between the late 18th century and the 19th century (the mid-19th century). They were used as small private altars inside homes
