18th-Century Lombard Cabinet
The marquetry work is extraordinary!
The upper frieze, lacquered black, creates a striking contrast with the urn adorned with foliage and acanthus leaves, all enhanced by a base molding.
In the center, the motifs are framed by a frieze featuring rosettes and stylized leaves.
The numerous boxwood fillets brilliantly combine grain-on-grain and cross-grain patterns.
The incredibly delicate marquetry depicts a shepherd and his dog, and a huntress posing on a drapery.
The background is adorned with shrubs and hills; a base and a reclining column complete the scene.
The sides, also inlaid, depict a peasant woman with her basket and a gentleman embracing his cow.
The legs are decorated with musical motifs, trailing vines, and stylized palmettes.
The inner and outer legs are also inlaid.
The whole is enhanced by a lightly carved cove molding.
The tabletop features a blue monticole in the center and a stylized animal at each corner.
The back, the bottom, and the interior contrast with their simplicity and rustic charm.
Probably used as a salt cabinet, its proportions, originality, and elegance make it a rare piece.
