An ammonite is the fossil of an extinct marine animal that was related to modern squid, octopuses and nautiluses. It was therefore not a snail, even though its spiral-shaped shell resembles one.
Ammonites lived in the oceans around 400 to 66 million years ago. They were particularly successful during the Mesozoic Era, the age of the dinosaurs, and became extinct during the same mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous Period, some 66 million years ago.
