Cecil Beaton developed a deep fascination with Hollywood star Greta Garbo very early on, long before their first meeting in 1932. Although they were both in other relationships at the time, the photographer fell deeply and lastingly in love with the actress. When they reunited in 1946, their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. Beaton even proposed to her; Garbo declined, bringing their romance to an end. Despite this breakup, the photographer took numerous portraits of the actress between 1946 and 1966.
