Inkstand Called Suzuribako - Japan
WRITING BOX known as Suzuribako

(a very small chip on one seashell and very slight minor chips)
Rectangular box made of reddish-brown lacquered wood, with the lid decorated with a lobster (ise-ebi) in negoro lacquer and gilded foliage. The inside of the lid is adorned with fifteen seashells, six of which are real and applied to the scene.
The interior of the writing box features a gilded, openwork double bottom divided into compartments—designed to hold, among other things, calligraphy brushes, a solid ink stick, or a small paper knife. The central rectangle holds an inkstone (suzuri), positioned vertically, which served as a base for grinding the Chinese ink stick. It is topped by a small oval water pot (mizuire) made of gilded copper, holding the dropper (suiteki) used to moisten the stone.
