Small Seascape With A Sailing Ship — Oil On Panel, Late 19th Century

A charming late 19th-century seascape, painted in oil on a wooden panel, depicting a large sailing ship anchored in a bay, accompanied by a small boat and brought to life by a few figures.

The composition captivates with its luminous and peaceful atmosphere: a slightly cloudy blue sky, a turquoise sea, delicately rendered sails, and a rocky shoreline, all rendered in a particularly fresh color palette where blues and ochres complement each other with great elegance.

The painterly treatment, quite free and sensitive, successfully captures the distinctive light of seascapes. The large three-masted ship, placed at the center of the composition, gives this small work a striking presence despite its size.

The painting is presented in its beautiful original antique frame, with a golden and brown patina, which is particularly decorative and perfectly suited to the subject.

The work has been carefully restored in our studios: the original varnish was stripped and cleaned to restore greater depth and freshness to the colors, while preserving the work’s antique character and patina.

An old inscription or signature is present on the back of the panel, which appears to read “Derrien” or “Désirien”. This attribution remains to be identified, and at this stage we prefer to remain cautious rather than propose a speculative identification.
