Saint Jerome, 16th-century Altarpiece Panel
A polychrome wood relief sculpture depicting Saint Jerome the Penitent, naked and aged in the desert, kneeling before the cross, stripped of all pretense before God; he strikes his chest with a stone, he is accompanied by his lion, next to which lies his cardinal’s hat, the “galero.” The panel has been thinned and set in an early 20th-century Renaissance-style frame; wood-boring insects present.
