Ornamental Vase

Artist: Guérin Bouffioux
Covered salt-glazed stoneware vase from Bouffioulx—Roger Guérin (1896–1954)—fired at high temperature, resulting in this flowing, mottled pink and blue glaze on the piece. The piece is a beautiful, uncommon size. The deeply molded relief decoration features large stylized flowers, leaves, and clusters; this is known as the “relief flowers” or “rose” pattern. The fretel on the lid, shaped like a small bird or button, is typical of his work. It is marked on the bottom: GUERIN BOUFFIOULX in incised lettering, sometimes with a form number.
Bouffioulx, Belgium, is the historic center of Belgian stoneware. Roger Guérin was the most famous master potter there during the interwar period. This is his most sought-after period. Roger Guérin collaborated with artists such as Charles Catteau for Boch. He exhibited at the 1925 Salon des Arts Décoratifs.
