A Finely Carved Walnut Center Chest, 16th-century Tuscany.
An important and rare center chest, finely carved with numerous bands of perimeter carvings—at least ten in number—that follow one after another; Most of these carvings—such as the coats of arms and central frames—are executed in high and low relief on the cabinet’s frame. This important collector’s piece was placed at the center of ornate study tables and was used to protect jewelry or other valuables.
The upper hinged top features a secret, concealed flap in its pointed section, providing additional storage space.
