Antique Nepalese Bronze Eleven-headed Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara

An impressive antique Nepalese bronze figure of Ekadashamukha Avalokiteshvara, the eleven-headed and thousand-armed manifestation of the Buddhist bodhisattva of infinite compassion.

Avalokiteshvara is seated in meditation upon a double-lotus pedestal. His principal hands are joined before his chest in anjali mudra, while the remaining arms display various Buddhist gestures and attributes. Numerous additional hands are arranged in two great fan-shaped groups around the figure, symbolising his ability to reach out and assist all living beings.

The eleven heads rise in several tiers, culminating in the head of Amitabha Buddha. According to Buddhist tradition, Avalokiteshvara was given eleven heads so that he could hear and observe the suffering of beings in every direction, together with a thousand arms with which to help them.

The bronze retains an attractive reddish-brown patina with areas of natural green oxidation.
