Rudolph Christiaan Polder (1926–2016) — The Café Marxist

Oil on canvas. Original painting. Hand-signed.

In the gallery of psychological portraits through which the Dutch artist Rudi Polder immortalized the unmasked characters of postwar Paris, the painting itself seems imbued with that dark existentialist melancholy found only in the attic rooms of the Left Bank. Among figures weighed down by neurosis and tobacco, this incisive portrait of the café ideologue stands out with an almost grotesque force: a armchair Marxist, sprawled on the venereal languor of a Turkish-patterned sofa, overcome by the weight of dogma and the inertia of the aperitif. Polder captures him in a cold, ashen light that exposes the falseness of his apostolate: the cap tilted to one side with a staged, proletarian flair; the puffed-up lapels of a thick coat that has never known the harshness of picket lines; and that thick, prophetic, wavy beard, where the ashes of Gauloises cigarettes and the empty words of after-dinner conversations seem to have left their mark. It is the pious and bitter dissection of a revolution in hibernation: a thinker draped in a rug, whose class dialectic evaporates amid the sofas with rolled-up blinds and Ottoman prints, in the sheer indolence of a Parisian winter.
