Two Neoclassical Drawings By Michel Nitot

Two drawings: one depicting Minerva reaching out her hand toward a vase, titled *The Judgment of Minerva*; the other depicting Mercury carrying a child. Both drawings are line drawings executed in pen, with the background rendered in red chalk wash. 
Both drawings are framed in molded, blackened wooden frames from the early 19th century.
The first is signed “m. dufresne” in the lower right corner, annotated at the bottom as “The Judgment of Minerva,” and measures 13.8 x 9.7 cm without the frame. With the frame, this drawing measures 24 x 19.3 cm.
The second is annotated at the bottom as “Mercury Carrying ??,” and measures 16.3 x 13.3 cm without the frame.
Michel Nitot, known as Charles Dufresne, was born in 1759 in Chezy-l’Abbaye. A draftsman and engraver, as well as an opera singer, he is known for his precise, classical-inspired drawings reminiscent of those by Flaxman, a collection of which was added to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs through the bequest of Jules Maciet in 1904. He died in Paris in 1805.
An article from the Société d’Histoire de l’Art Français published in 1950 is dedicated to him.
