Born in Pajay, Isère, Bonnardel studied under Zacharie and later under J.B. Poncet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he would go on to teach.
He exhibited in Lyon as early as 1890 and later in Paris, primarily depicting figures, interiors, and fruit.
