19th-century neoclassical basalt ceramic vase.
In the 19th century, several major ceramic manufacturers excelled at imitating bronze or artistic cast iron for pieces in the Neo-Renaissance or grotesque styles. The meticulous relief work (mascaron heads, drapery, and a lyre-playing cherub at the base) is typical of black slipware or fine molded stoneware from the Victorian era. The piece may have come from the Minton or Wedgwood factories, particularly in a black stoneware known as Black Basalt. There is no trademark stamp; the number 3549 is likely the mold reference, and the “+” or “x” is the craftsman’s mark.
Good overall condition. Please note two small chips (the wing of a cherub and the wing of a swan), visible in photos 7 and 8.
