We are pleased to present this 18th-century Italian-school oil painting on canvas. A splendid religious painting depicting the iconography of the Immaculate Conception—Mary born without original sin. At the center of the painting is a full-length figure of the Virgin Mary, suspended in an ethereal, golden space. She wears a red robe (often associated with human nature or the blood of Christ) and is draped in a wide, voluminous blue cloak (a symbol of divinity, paradise, and purity). Her hands are crossed over her chest in a gesture of humility and acceptance. Her gaze is gently directed downward. The figure is surrounded by a crown of luminous stars around her head and rests her feet on a crescent moon and a serpent, both surrounded by clouds. On either side of the Virgin, several heads of winged cherubim (angels) emerge from the clouds, gazing at her. This work is rich in religious symbolism. The crown of stars represents the twelve apostles, symbols of the Church itself, of which Mary is the mother and central figure. Her hands crossed over her chest symbolize acceptance of the divine will and a deep inner devotion, emphasizing Mary’s role as the “handmaid of the Lord.” The crescent moon represents the transience and passage of time on earth; Mary, standing upon it, demonstrates her superiority over earthly things. The serpent crushed beneath the Virgin’s feet is a symbol of Satan and original sin. Mary triumphs over evil, being “Immaculate,” the only human creature untainted by sin. The angelic heads emerging from the clouds and the warm golden light pervading the background indicate that the scene does not take place on earth, but in a purely heavenly and spiritual dimension.
