Christoph Ludwig Agricola (1665–1724), Attributed To – Summer, Italianate Landscape
Christoph Ludwig Agricola (1665–1724), attributed to – Summer, Italianate Landscape – Early 18th Centur
In this remarkably refined cabinet landscape, Christoph Ludwig Agricola evokes a vision of summer shaped by memories of his travels through Italy, where he spent considerable time in Naples.
Beneath a luminous sky, a road winds through a wooded landscape enlivened by small figures, a rider on a white horse and a dog. The foliage, rocks and distant landscape are rendered with exceptional precision. The varied greens, delicacy of the trees and subtle handling of light demonstrate the artist’s virtuosity on an intimate scale.
Born in Regensburg, Agricola travelled through England, the Netherlands, France and Italy. His landscapes, admired for their atmospheric qualities and sensitive representation of the seasons, are preserved in several European collections, including those in Dresden, Kassel and Schwerin.
A late work by the artist, this tempera forms a particularly coherent pair with Winter, also offered for sale. The southern light and luxuriant vegetation of Summer find their counterpart in the northern architecture and snowbound silence of its companion.
