Large Venetian Baroque Armchair In Carved Walnut, 18th Century

An important Venetian armchair made of carved and sculpted walnut, dating from between the late 17th and the first half of the 18th century.
The frame, of considerable size, displays the vigorous style of the Baroque, characterized by rich sculptural detailing and an elegant flow in the carved elements.
Particularly elaborate are the large, contoured armrests, which feature a volute-like movement and are embellished with carved foliage motifs. The front supports extend into the strongly curved legs, which are also decorated with large volutes and plant motifs.
Of particular interest is the large, openwork, and fully carved front crossbar, composed of an intricate symmetrical interlacing of opposing volutes and acanthus leaves. The deep, three-dimensional carving creates a rich interplay of solid and void spaces and is one of the armchair’s most distinctive decorative elements.
The large upholstered backrest features a gently contoured upper profile, while the seat—spacious and comfortable—retains the substantial proportions typical of the large armchairs of that era.
The armchair has recently been reupholstered with a high-quality fabric, chosen to complement the piece’s character, featuring a rich floral and botanical pattern in shades of antique pink, beige, green, and ocher. The upholstery covers the backrest, seat, lower band, and armrests.
The wood retains a beautiful antique patina and natural signs of wear, particularly noticeable on the carved parts and in the most exposed areas, consistent with the piece’s age and use.
