Carved Wood Frame in the Transitional Louis XIV–Louis XV Style – 89 × 68.5 cm

A highly characteristic frame in the Louis XIV style, already anticipating the transition towards Louis XV. Its particularly harmonious proportions make it ideally suited to a landscape or, when displayed vertically, to a portrait of the period.

The broad moulding is richly decorated in relief with grotesques, scrolling foliage, shells, masks and fantastical figures, arranged in a symmetrical composition. The corners and centres of each side are accentuated by more elaborate ornaments, while a delicate foliate border surrounds the sight opening.

A dark patina now covers much of the original surface finish, giving the frame a particularly decorative antique character.

Wear, rubbing, minor losses and occasional damage to the decoration, consistent with age and visible in the photographs.
