The Nymph Amalthea And Her Goat, After Pierre Julien (1731–1804) – Barbedienne
Artist: D’après Le Célèbre Modèle Du Sculpteur Français Pierre Julien (1731–1804).
An impressive and exceptionally large sculpture depicting the nymph Amalthea with the young Zeus and his goat, based on the famous model by the French sculptor Pierre Julien (1731–1804).
According to Greek mythology, Amalthea secretly took in and protected the infant Zeus on the island of Crete to save him from his father, Cronus. She is depicted here alongside the goat whose milk nourished the young god, creating a mythological composition that is both elegant and full of tenderness.
The sculpture stands out for the remarkable quality of its execution, particularly evident in the graceful modeling of Amalthea, the naturalistic rendering of the goat, and the refined and abundant detailing of the drapery. Its monumental dimensions give it a particularly imposing decorative presence.
The work is signed “Barbedienne,” referring to the prestigious Parisian firm Ferdinand Barbedienne, one of the most important French art foundries of the 19th century, renowned for the high quality of its sculpture casts.
A refined, spectacular, and highly decorative work, particularly remarkable for its extraordinary dimensions.
