Sacristy Cabinet, Louis XIV Style, Made Of Solid Oak, 18th-century
Sacristy cabinet used as a secretary desk, Louis XIV–Regency period, solid oak, 18th century
A beautiful and original 18th-century solid oak sacristy cabinet, featuring craftsmanship characteristic of the transition from the Louis XIV to the Regency periods.
This piece is distinguished by its tall, narrow proportions and its two-part construction. It opens at the top and bottom with two doors featuring heavily molded and elegantly scrolled panels, framed by rounded, molded stiles.
The central section is particularly interesting: it features a drop-down panel that serves as a writing desk, allowing this piece to be classified as a two-part cabinet that doubles as a secretary desk. This unusual design lends it both decorative appeal and genuine functionality.
The upper section is crowned by a substantial, projecting molded cornice, which lends the piece a commanding presence despite its narrow width.
When opened, the upper section reveals several storage levels. The interior is beautifully lined with a Toile de Jouy fabric featuring figures and pastoral scenes in shades of red on a light background, creating a particularly elegant contrast with the warm, deep hue of the antique oak.
Also noteworthy are the antique fittings, locks, and hardware, as well as the piece’s traditional construction, which attests to the craftsmanship of 18th-century cabinetmakers and joiners.
The solid oak features a beautiful, deep, and warm antique patina. The wood’s natural variations, signs of wear, and small irregularities acquired over the centuries lend it all the charm and authenticity sought after in a period piece.
With its unusual construction, central flap that doubles as a writing desk, and beautiful proportions, this is a piece of character, particularly decorative, that can now find its place just as well in an entryway as in a living room, library, or study.
