Henriot, A Breton Dance Couple From Quimper

Artist: Robert Micheau Vernez 1907-1989
A pair of dancers made of polychrome glazed earthenware, from a famous series depicting the various dances and regions of Brittany.
Our pair represents Plougastel; the caption in Breton on the base reads “the dance of the ribbons.”

Created by Robert Micheau Vernet, born in Brest in 1907 and died in Le Croisic in 1989, this piece was made for the Henriot Pottery in Quimper around 1940.
Robert Micheau Vernet was fascinated by the world and the colors of his native Brittany. In 1925, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Brest, then in Nantes, and finally in Paris, where he studied until 1930.
In addition to earthenware, he worked as an illustrator for stained-glass windows, posters, ceramics (Quimper train station), and numerous other media through which he expressed his love for Breton traditions.

This pair is in perfect condition, with the artist’s signature on the pedestal and beneath the subject,
