Adalbert Franz Eugen Begas (1836–1888), “the Folk Song.”
The painting depicts a young woman with curly hair, dressed in a simple historical costume and wearing a white scarf. She is seated in a natural landscape, one hand resting on the strings of a harp, while she holds a bouquet of red poppies in her other hand.
This work was exhibited at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1872. It bears the artist’s signature as well as the date 1872. The painting and its exhibition history are documented in Friedrich von Boetticher’s multi-volume reference work, *Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts* (“Works by 19th-Century Painters”).
The painting is in very good condition. It is set in an early 19th-century French gilded frame with a few small chips.
