Art Nouveau / Japanning-style folding screen.
Probably from France or Belgium. Circa 1890–1910.
Double-sided folding screen / room divider.
One side features Art Nouveau-style painting with characteristic motifs of whiplash patterns and swans. The colors are truly magnificent.
The other side features “Japanning”-style paintings. One area is damaged (see photos). The geishas with their shamisen and the figure holding a fish are inspired by ukiyo-e prints.
