The Return Of The Farmer. Large 18th-century Print. Ingouf The Younger, After Charles Benazech

Artist: Ingouf Le Jeune
A beautiful, large 18th-century French print titled “The Return of the Plowman,” engraved by François-Robert Ingouf, known as Ingouf the Younger (1747–1812), after a composition by the painter Charles Benazech.

The scene depicts a farmer returning to his family in a particularly lively rural setting: the figures, children, animals, and rural landscape are rendered with great finesse.

The plate bears the inscriptions: “Ch. Benazech pinx. 1776” and “Ingouf the Younger, Sculp. 1781.”
The lower portion bears the title “The Return of the Laborer,” accompanied by a dedication to the King’s brother, as well as his richly engraved coat of arms.

The print was published in Paris by the Campion brothers, print dealers, on Rue Saint-Jacques in the city of Rouen—a reference also visible in the lower margin.

A very fine work executed in etching and burin, characteristic of the great French engraving tradition of the second half of the 18th century.
The quality of the drawing and the finesse of the engraving are particularly remarkable in the faces, the fabrics, the animals, and the rendering of the landscape.

The work is mounted under glass in an antique gilded frame, with a wide border of gilded fillets that showcases the print exceptionally well.

A few foxing spots and signs of age are visible on the paper and the mount, which are entirely consistent with the work’s age and visible in the photographs.
The piece as a whole retains a very beautiful presentation.Period: 18th century – 1781.
