Artist: Benjamin Ulmann, Blotzheim 1829- Paris 1884
He arrived in Paris in 1837. Ulmann was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1846, first to the studio of Michel Martin Drolling (1786–1851) and then to that of François-Édouard Picot (1786–1868).
He made his debut at the 1855 Salon with his painting Dante in Hell.

In 1859, he won the Grand Prix de Rome in the history painting category for his painting Coriolanus Takes Refuge with Tullus, King of the Volscians.
Benjamin Ulmann lived for five years in Rome at the Villa Medici, where he joined Jean-Jacques Henner. During his stay in Rome, he painted several works.
Our work, signed in the lower left corner with a monogram, is located and likely dated in the upper right corner (currently being deciphered)
