Pair Of Rococo-style Bronze Fire Tongs With Putti And Naturalistic Decorations Ref1209
Pair of andirons decorated with putti.
The andirons are made of bronze in the Rocaille style with an antique patina; one of the putti holds a bird and a nest in his hands, while the other holds a rudder and a turtle, with a fishing net slung over his shoulder.
The engraving is meticulous, with a smooth, lustrous finish. A hallmark on the back is indecipherable; the set consists of several assembled pieces.
Louis XV-style work, dating from the early to mid-19th century.
Condition: As found; one piece is soldered to the bronze—this is an old bronze solder joint, possibly period-authentic, which is barely visible and very sturdy without detracting from the piece as a whole (see photos, marked with an arrow); the mercury gilding is worn on the surface.
