An 18th-century Copper Grain Measure, Also Known As A "ferrat."
An old copper grain measure, also known as a “ferrat,” from the18th century.
Made from a single sheet of hammered copper reinforced with copper strips,copper strips, ferrats could be either simple or of finequality, depending on the customer’s preference. On this one, the craftsman created an interlaced patternacross the top of the sheet through his hammering. Other engraved decorations adorn the strips andreinforcements.
The entire assembly (handles, bands) is held together by copper rivets.
Despite its age and several veryold repairs and modifications, this ferrat’s patina is superb.
