A rare and beautiful genre scene from the second half of the 19th century by A. Rueff, who faithfully reproduced, with the same talent, Auguste Meissonnier’s work “Une Chanson” from around 1870. Renaissance and historical scenes were highly prized in the mid-19th century, pairing divinely with Louis XIII-style reproduction furniture. The beautiful original key-frame, made of richly ornamented wood with stucco and gilding, frames this piece divinely well. A beautiful, inspired work full of poetry, in which two figures entertain themselves to the sound of a mandolin in a vaulted interior; the precision of the details, furniture, and clothing, as well as the finesse of the depiction of these two companions in a harmonious composition—all lend this vivid painting, with its soft colors and precise brushwork, a distinct appeal, a mark of quality for a very beautiful and perfectly preserved work.
