Large Robert Picault Ceramic Pitcher With Green Enamel Vallauris Circa 1960

Artist: Robert Picault
This striking hand-painted ceramic ewer was created by the renowned French ceramic artist Robert Picault in Vallauris during the mid-20th century. Instantly recognizable by its bold geometric decoration and vibrant palette, this piece perfectly reflects Picault’s distinctive artistic language, inspired by Mediterranean traditions while embracing the modern aesthetic that made Vallauris ceramics famous worldwide.

The rounded body is richly decorated with alternating turquoise-green spiral motifs and warm ochre starburst designs arranged in an elegant checkerboard pattern. The neck and foot are enhanced with rhythmic geometric borders, while the sculptural arched handle and gracefully curved pouring spout provide the piece with an expressive silhouette. Every brushstroke was applied by hand, resulting in subtle variations that make each example unique.

The underside bears the painted “RP” monogram, confirming the work of Robert Picault. Beyond its decorative appeal, this ewer demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic originality for which Picault became internationally celebrated. Whether displayed on its own, incorporated into a collection of Vallauris ceramics, or used as a statement piece in a contemporary or traditional interior, it immediately attracts attention through its lively colors and sculptural form.

The piece remains in very good vintage condition with only light wear consistent with age and use, preserving its beautiful glaze and vivid hand-painted decoration.
