Terracotta bust depicting Jeanne Bécu, Countess du Barry (1743–1793), mistress of Louis XV, based on the model created by the sculptor Augustin Pajou (1730–1809), the king’s sculptor and a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
The original model, created during the countess’s lifetime, is now housed at the Louvre and ranks among the most famous sculpted portraits of 18th-century France. It depicts the mistress as a bust, with a bare shoulder, dressed in an antique-style drape tied at the chest, her hair pulled up and curled in English curls falling down her nape—a style characteristic of ceremonial portraits under Louis XVI.
