Needlework Picture: 17th-century English Embroidery, Charming And Rustic

A beautiful antique embroidery, nearly squarein shape (50 × 47 cm), made in England circa 17th century.
It was mounted on a wooden panel in the last centuryand displayed in a frame specially designed for it.
The scene depicts a bucolic landscape, setapart from the dwellings visible in background. In this lively valley, a familyof deer, trees laden with ripe fruit, birds, and sheep coexist. In the foreground, a young couple draws closer:she, likely the daughter of household, wears a pink silk dress; he, a shepherd,is identifiable by his crook.
As is often the case with antique textiles, acidityof certain dyes has altered the colors over centuries, sometimes changing theiroriginal appearance.
This phenomenon is particularly noticeable on the youngwoman’s face, whose complexion now appears darker than it originally was.
Exposure to light has also contributed to the fading of certain shades.
This embroidery has not undergone any restoration.
Aside from a small area in the sky aboverooftops, the weft remains very subtle and barely visible.
