Artist: Tanaka Terukazu
A hammered metal box with silver and Kuromido stripes bymaster metalworker Tanaka Terukazu (田中照一), titled "Straipu Hako" (which means Striped box).

This box is most probably a jewelry box with its interior made of wood lined with green velvet (circled traces on the velvet).

The artist’s seal is engraved on the bottom.

Comes with its original box signed by the artist.

TanakaTerukazu is known for his mastery of shakudo—the fusion of gold,silver, and copper alloys—which gives rise to his iconic forms and luminous surfaces.He has mastered the art of blending the tones ofcopper alloys with gold and silver, creating objects withoriginal and oversized forms. Copper alloys such as shakudo,Shibuichi, and Kuromido vary in hue from vermilion brown to cool blue-gray ornearly black. These historically Japanese alloys first appeared centuriesago and were used in sword fittings and Buddhistornaments. 

TanakaTerukazu, born in 1945, is the son of a blacksmith from the Yanaka district of Tokyo andreceived his early training from his father. He graduated from Tokyo Metropolitan Crafts High School, and his work wasfirst accepted into the Nitten, the National Exhibition of the JapanArt Academy, in 1971. He began participating in the annual New Crafts Exhibition (ShinKogei Ten) in 1979 and now serves as a judge for the event. His work has received numerous awards, including theTokyo Governor’s Award and the Grand Prize from the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
