More than just a set photographer, Sam Shaw was one of Marilyn Monroe’s closest and most loyal confidants throughout her career. Their unique bond gave rise to photographs of great spontaneity, capturing the actress far from the artificial glamour of Hollywood, in moments of intimacy and total freedom. It was also Shaw who conceived and took the most iconic photograph of the 20th century: the one of Marilyn holding up her white dress over a subway grate for the film *The Seven Year Itch*.
