Queen's Chair
Re-stained wood (walnut?) and cane-seated
Stamped on the outside of the back crossbar: "M. CRESSON"Paris, circa 1760
Dimensions: H. 87; Seat H. 43; W. 42; D. 45 (cm.)

Queen-style cane-seated musician chair, dating from the Louis XV period. It rests on curved legs with scroll-shaped finials known as “chaussons.” Scalloped apron and violin-shaped backrest.

Stamped by Michel Cresson (1709–after 1773), master cabinetmaker in Paris during the reign of Louis XV.

Granted master status on August 30, 1740, he was as eminent and prolific as his brother Louis; his workshop was located on Rue de Cléry, under the sign of the Gros-Chapelet. He was commissioned to provide furniture for the Prince of Condé at the Palais-Bourbon and the Château de Chantilly.

Condition report: normal wear and tear, signs of woodworm damage, upholstered with a new cushion cover in ribbed cotton velvet.
