Pair Of Beaded Mocassins From The Great Plains

An elegant pair of traditional deer-skin moccasins, entirely handmade and richly adorned with a remarkable design of antique glass beads. The uppers feature a perfectly symmetrical geometric pattern at the toe, combining white, deep blue, turquoise, red, and yellow beads. This elegant design is framed by several rows of fine blue beads that delicately highlight the contours of each shoe.

The large side flaps, fully beaded on both sides, are one of the most distinctive features of this pair. Their generous width is extended by a perfectly balanced geometric design that continues onto the sides and ends harmoniously at the back of the heel. The quality of craftsmanship, the evenness of the beading, and the balance of the designs are a testament to particularly meticulous workmanship.

The deerskin construction is in keeping with the traditions of the Great Plains peoples of the late 19th century. The gathers on the forefoot remain well defined, the original seams are sturdy, and the soft leather soles show moderate wear, perfectly consistent with historical use.

The interior retains its original lining of printed cotton with a floral pattern, characteristic of the manufactured fabrics used in Great Plains communities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This detail, rarely preserved in such fine condition, reinforces the authenticity and historical significance of the pair.

Thanks to its excellent state of preservation, the finesse of its beadwork, the harmony of its colors, and the quality of its materials, this pair is a beautiful example of the beadwork art of the Great Plains peoples at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Condition: in very fine condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.

Appraisal: While this pair is not exceptionally rare, it is a beautiful example of Native American art from the Great Plains. Therefore, there is no need to pursue this type of piece at any cost. However, when negotiation is possible, it is always wise to discuss the price with the seller to secure the best deal. Acquired under favorable terms, this pair is an excellent collector’s item, both for its authenticity and the quality of its craftsmanship.
